We had a beautiful fall in Portland, following a pretty chilly and wet summer. I'm posting this the day after Christmas, and the winter has continued to be fairly mild. It's either been rainy or cold, but not both. I consider this to be good weather!

Henry is so into helping and doing things himself. It's so incredible to see him learning something new each day.

Elliot was napping while Henry raked the leaves for me. He came out and took right to tossing them into the air and jumping into the pile. It was great fun, and a new experience due to leaves usually being soggy in Portland.

Waiting to See Santa

Santa event number one for the year was seeing him arrive to Fremont Street via fire engine! I thought it was going to blow their minds, but both Henry and Elliot were pretty mellow about the whole thing. They like the idea of Santa, as in a guy who gives them presents, but haven't been enveloped in the whole Christmas thing.

When I was doing laundry, Elliot found a shirt of Mike's and decided to be like papa. Henry followed suit, and by the time I got out the camera, Elliot was over it. I have to most unwilling photo subjects ever! But they're pretty cute in real life!

Elliot's Totally Made-up Story

Oddly, there have been no time-outs for hitting recently that I know of. They made these puppets at playgroup, and I didn't think to follow up the next day to see if they had made up stories there.

Interestingly, I would have known this frowny puppet was Elliot's. He is less expressive with his emotions (ie - less prone to falling on the ground crying about sprinkles on his cereal than Henry), but is very interested in bad guys, hi-ya-ing, ghosts, monsters and their ilk. If anyone's going to talk about people going to jail (not video taped), being angry or "Mama, when grow into a man, I'll have a knife. But not a knife to cut people. A knife for cutting play-dough. Or I can use my knife for making(frosting) a cake," it's going to be Elliot.

And he's just as sweet as Henry. Henry loves 'nuggles more and tends to be more clingy, but Elliot is also loving, in a clowny way. Last week I was trying to take a snooze on the swing with Henry. Elliot leaned over and kissed my lips, like in Snow White he said. Hi-Ho is a favorite movie around here, so I'm just glad he'd rather play the role of prince rather than evil witch.

The River!

I've often lamented that there are no places to swim in Oregon. The rivers are dangerous and cold, the beach is cold, dangerous and far away, and the lakes are stagnant and swampy. I grew up with lakes all around, so I'm pretty picky.

However, our new neighbors (who I adore) asked us to check out the Sandy River with them this morning. The Sandy River is the River of Death to me, with at least one drowning of an adult and a child each summer. I knew she wasn't going to sacrifice her girls to the River Gods, so I figured we'd be safe.

We had our doubts though, when saw a huge warning sign about drownings in the area. Not too reassuringly, there were lifeguards and a strong recommendation for life vests for the kids. On the upside, they also pointed out a nice, calm place to play and swim.

The end of the story is this: No one drowned, the river was calm for a nice stretch, I got to dunk and swim (!) for a few minutes and my kids went "swimming" in a natural body of water for the first time.

And we're all tuckered out!

On Sunday the boys and I packed up and rushed up to Seattle to assist my dear sister in the labor and delivery process.

H&E didn't do much assisting, of course, but were able to visit Baby Rowan less than 24 hours after birth. Elliot LOVES babies and was enamored; Henry don't much notice babies and was not very interested in his new cousin (despite appearing more engaged in this photo).

Uncle Seth has video of Elliot holding Rowan, I'm sure it's pretty cute. I can't wait to get back up there and see the newest little perfect person in the world!

Last Friday Elliot and Henry turned three! The day was great. Finally sunny, we ran to a garage sale and picked up a little bike for Elliot. It was $5 really, really well spent! Both Henry and Elliot are nuts about riding their bikes.

We also made birthday crowns, took the bicycles for a walk (as Elliot puts it) with Grandpa Adair, and Papa came home early from work and we went to see Toy Story 3! It was H&E's first theater experience, and it was 3D to boot. About 40 minutes in they were both restless, but we managed to stay for the whole show.

Growing Up

Last week a propos to nothing, Henry said, "Mama, when you grow down you'll be the baby and I'll be a mama." He knew he was being silly and it was cute.

Today I was petting the dogs in the yard. I grabbed Elliot and asked if he were a dog and needed to be pet as well. He said, "No, I just grew up last weekend." He was being truthful, these almost-three-year-olds have grown in the last few weeks!

Yesterday I took Henry to pick up pizza, just the two of us. We were chatting in the car and I remembered that I saw his playgroup nanny working with the kids on spelling their names.

I asked him, "Can you spell your name?"
No response.

I revised the question, "What are the letters in your name?"
His answer: "H.e.n.r.y."

Holy cow, I was floored. I asked him two more times and he refused, so I laid off. We got home and Mike and I interrupted each other, both eager to speak.

He said, "Elliot can read." I said, "Henry can spell his name!"

Apparently while H and I were gone, Mike pulled something up on the computer that said "Winnie-the-Pooh" and Elliot recognized it. Per Mike, there were no pictures or other ways to identify the phrase.

I think we have geniuses on our hands!

(no one break my heart and tell me all 2.5 year-olds should be able to spell their names. :) )

Henry and Elliot had a wonderful Christmas, with lots and lots of presents to open. Here is a little sample of their different opening styles. Henry tears with the sole goal of uncovering the gift; Elliot tears little pieces of paper off, bit by bit. Henry's is cleaner; Elliot's takes longer and prolongs the enjoyment. Both are such fun to watch!

Auntie Daphne, Uncle Seth, Uncle Alex, Grandma Judi and Grandpa Don all came over for dinner and more gifts. This Boxing Day has been all about sugar, wildness and not-listening-or-sitting-for-dinner. The boys were off to bed at 7:28 and nary a peep has been heard from their room. Phew!

What's really interesting is that Henry is the ringleader for deciding whose is whose. He laid claim to the blue cups, assigning Elliot the green. It took Elliot about 6 weeks to go along with, and insist upon using the green cups. Henry fell in love with a "Mixer Puzzle" and deemed all others inferior (and therefore Elliot's). For the most part Elliot is easy going and flows right along with whatever. However, this past week they are obsessed with wooden spoons. Gone are the days when they would share or trade; we are in full battle mode over these spoons. Some replacements are acceptable occasionally. Occasionally mama removes all spoons from sight!

This photo was taken in July 2007, so Elliot is three or so weeks old. Was it Elliot? Maybe Mike remembers.

I think it was the first time they were separated, although Elliot was being watched by nurses about 2 hours after being born for about [forever] half an hour?

Oddly, lots of details are a touch hazy around this time period.

This was the first time Mike wore a baby, and I am glad I snapped a photo against his wishes. What a little baby that was! Can you imagine what a sight that must have been? If only I could rewind time and relive life in five minute chunks [handpicked by me, of course].

Painting Pumpkins

We went to the pumpkin patch with Uncle Alex, Uncle Seth and Auntie Daphne. Henry and Elliot are not yet to be trusted with knives, but they were very pleased to paint their pumpkins. Later the grown-ups had squash soup and apple pie for dinner. Henry and Elliot stuck with corn on the cob. Fresh corn is the best!

Yesterday I was pulling the boys and the bike trailer (approx. 80 lbs) up a short & steep hill. We'd had after a nice afternoon of playing in a friend's pool. As I was huffing and puffing my way up, I heard Henry say, "Go faster, Mama." I barely got out a shocked, "What did you say?" A nicely dressed bike commuter sailed by me saying, "I think he told you go go faster." Yeah, I got that! What a cheeky monkey.

I had to call and tell Daphne about that, and she reminded me of the time I called her last week. We were in Spokane after driving up. I loaded the picnic goodies into the car, then the boys. As I sat down to drive, Henry pops out with, "Mama's car is too dirty." True, young man, true!

My buddy Staci and I took our kids to the zoo last week when the weather was so springy! Initially we had Maya and Elliot walk on leashes and Henry was contained. I eventually swapped Henry and Elliot, but Henny knew that the way to travel was to be pushed in Maya's stroller. It was great for M&E to run around, test limits (they could only go as far as the leash allowed), learn to walk with crowds and how to navigate stroller/pedestrian spaces. Elliot loved the bats, and Henry was pretty happy with everything. Elliot and I took some time to check out the big machinery they were using to build the new lion exhibit (but that video will come later).

Another Bad Idea

One day Elliot woke and insisted that I put Henry's shoes on him. They wore matching shoes to Auntie Ada's wedding, so he could have thought they were his. :) Anyhow, he really wanted to go outside, and tried to get out on his own. I'll let you guess how this ended.

Henry and Elliot were in the bathtub and Elliot was pouring water into/around his mouth. I told him "Ew, no yuck, no drinking the water" and Henry thought that was the funniest thing he had ever heard! For the rest of the bath he would say, "no, nuk, drink water!", look at me and laugh. Silly boy!

Toward the end you can hear Henry say "caca" as he sees the garbage can. I've been trying to wean him of this word, but he really likes it. He will now say "dirty", "garbage", and "yucky", but caca is his fall back word for anything dirty or stuck to his hands. These little minds...

Good Bye, January!

I took the month off of blogging because...well because it was a cranktastic month. Henry began throwing tempter tantrums. Illness set in mid-month. It started as a cold, and over the course of a month it turned into a real, green snot cold and now (as of Tuesday) the first ear infection. Sigh.

The good news:
Henry talks! Real, honest talking. Two word phrases, random words that I have no idea where he's heard them...mirror, wallet (today while standing on the dining room table holding my wallet), lots and lots of awesome things! It is so much fun, and really is my favorite time so far.

Elliot hasn't thrown any tantrums yet!

My friend's sister-in-law is watching the boys while I'm working. It is so great to have a reliable mom take care of the three boys (she brings her little one who is 6 weeks younger than H&E). It's fantastic that I know the boys are being well taken care of.

Christmas was fun at our house! There was a ton of snow outside and presents on the ground. When one baby would open a present they both wanted it right away. We would have to lure one away with a new gift to open. It was a lot of fun, and everyone enjoyed the homemade cinnamon rolls. Hurray for holidays!

Christmas Eve's Eve

After being stuck at home for a few days in a row, I had to get us out. I walked the boys over to Brittanie & Nate's house a few blocks away. Because we were sled-less I had to carry them both. My arms were so tired by the time we got there!

We ended up sledding down their hill on a garbage can lid. The boys really weren't sure about it at first, but then they asked for more! Nate pulled out their wagon and we tried to get a good picture of everyone. I'll bet Brittanie has a photo of everyone smiling.

(Lila) Faith, Hope, and Luck of the Draw

Earlier in the week I read of a baby who was born very prematurely. He is facing an uphill road, but one that is passable. I follow the blog of micropremie twins , who were born shortly after their parents found out they were having twins. 24 weeks! Can you imagine finding out you're getting two babies late in the game and then giving birth very shortly thereafter?!? The girls are happy little people, but it broke my heart to hear about this new little baby.

Yesterday, on Christmas Eve, I found out a little newborn baby had been born, two days prior, with a heart defect, but was fighting. Last night I learned she died. The parents didn't find out about the defect until a few weeks ago; they thought everything was progressing fine.

These little babies have been on my mind all week. I had the best pregnancy, the best twin pregnancy in the books. And despite a scare or two, my guys were always fine and thriving. 38 weeks and they wouldn't leave! Birthed the way I wanted and breastfed from hour one. I'm feeling so thankful that life for me and these boys has been good. I can't say blessed because that doesn't fit...but we're lucky. Though we lost two little ones along the way, they were so little our lives hadn't been formed around them. There is no "meant to be" or "given what we can handle", there is only a healthy today and hope for a healthy tomorrow.

In addition to the ill babies, a women was in a car accident and is currently in a coma. Brittanie's mom was in an accident two Halloweens ago and I've tried to be the best friend I can be to Britt over the last year. I've learned so much about the brain and comas and recovery and how one decision or press of the gas pedal can change so many lives. I hope and pray that the boys (all three of them) and I have the most pedestrian, safe lives. And I try to ignore that it's just how things go sometimes.

I was telling Mike about the first baby the other day, and he asked me why I would want to risk having another. And maybe he's right; it's not worth the chance. I'm not sold on a third, but wasn't ready to give it up yet. But now, well, maybe my ducks have hatched and I need to thank my lucky stars for the life we have.

Guess who got extra squeezes last night?

I was whining to myself that we don't get real snow in Portland. Everyone else in town was excited about an inch of powder, while we were stuck inside due to wind. Our house is surprisingly close to the Columbia River and it's like we live in a wind tunnel when the Easterly blows.

My friends and sister in Seattle posted pictures of sledding and covered roads. My dad send photos of his buried house.

My friend Alison came over and amused us, and in turn Henry amused her. For some reason he would smile, quickly tense up and quiver. It was the first time I'd ever noticed him do it, and he seemed to do it on purpose. Ah, the wonders of cabin fever.

Cookie Day

Here are two photos Debbie took when we were at her house two weeks ago. Auntie Shannon and I went out there for Cookie Day. We made pumpkin, chai snickerdoodle, and ginger cookies. Debbie added in some caramel meltaways, which were delicious!

It's taken Henry and Elliot a bit of time to catch onto the whole talking-in-English thing. They've been adding a few honest word here and there, so I sat down and wrote them out today. They're a bit behind their peers, but not too far!

Elliot and Henry's Words at 17 Months, in order of appearance:
- quack like a duck instead of saying the word
- Fish (First word the boys would reliably repeat, in addition to identifying the fish when asked.)
- Apple (Henry's first "real" word. That is, a word that he didn't parrot back and say at our prompting. One day I opened up the refrigerator, he pointed to a peach and said "apple". Out of nowhere! I was so excited! Elliot picked it up soon after, so also his first real word.)
- Balloon
- dada
- papa (Mike gets two names and I get none.)
- baby (both picked this up in a few hours after I gave them baby dolls. I was surprised.)

- mama (rarely and never on command)
- up (first word I felt like I've *taught* them.)

- empty (Random. I didn't know we said "empty" a lot, but we must.)

Notes: Henry is doing great sleeping in his crib-turned-into-toddler-bed, Elliot promptly fell out and stood crying at the door. He's now sleeping in a pack-n-play wedged between the cribs. He'll take some naps in the bed, but seems to prefer the comfort of sides. The first night I was trying to comfort Elliot and was sitting on his bed holding him. Henry woke up, stumbled over in the dark, laid his head on my feet and fell asleep. It was so sweet.

My poor sister got saddled with my kids and someone else's kids when she was down visiting last weekend.

Things I love about Elliot

* How when he was born I said, "That's a big baby!" as they whisked him across the room 6lbs, 2oz is not particularly big; I think I was more shocked that he was a real, honest human.
* I used to love his whirl of hair at the back of his head. It was so perfectly round. It still is, but now that he's got a decent head of hair I can't see it.
* I do love his curls, even though people say he has a mullet. (Written before Haircut 2008, of course).
* I love that Mike complains about Elliot's long hair every time I mention cutting it he objects. Strongly.
* I love his huge eyes. They were open from the first second of life and in his travel across the hospital room I could see how big and dark they where.
*I love that he pulls me all over the place by holding onto my finger. He can almost run, but it's so important to him that I see what he sees, that I help him with what he needs. Yes, it gets old, but it is sweet.
* I love that he chatters. His words are generally not in English, but he knows what he is talking about.
* I love his laugh.
* I love love love him in striped pajamas. I don't have any pictures but I will take some because he is amazingly adorable.
* I love that he is friendly. He is rarely shy or slow to get involved in activities.
* I (kind of) love that he figured out how to climb the slide today (it's all about not using the knees).

* I love his sturdy little body. He's always been solid, even at six-nine.
* I love his dimples, so deep and so sweet.
* I love how big his mouth is. It's huge! He'll throw his head back and laugh; I think you can see all the way to China.
* I love when he says, "no, no, no". Even though it's coming back at me!
* I love how he's an easy teether. He just pops teeth out.
* I love that when he wakes up he likes to throw himself down in his crib and play peek-a-boo. Over and over!
* I love his soft hair. I love how dark it is.
* I love his husky voice. I hope it never changes.
* I love catching him in conversation with himself. He'll go on and on in Henryese. Then he'll look at me and keep on talking, as if I can understand him. Sometimes he speaks under his breath, lately he's been getting louder.
* I love how reserved he is. He'll stare at you until he decided you're okay. He did this to me when I first saw him after our Atlanta trip. He's cautious. He is safe in his actions.

Happy Birthday, Uncle Gavin!!!

This afternoon my friend Alison helped me take the boys to a fancy-pants photo studio in town. The event was much different than I had imagined. For some reason I thought it would be a casual affair with pictures snapped while the toddlers toddled. In actuality it was much more formal sit-in-a-studio quick photo session.

I paid $10 for a digital print, but it was pretty cool in that they took about 20 photos and I'm sure one of them will have turned out well. Thank god Alison was with us because it took FOREVER and it could have turned ugly. Here are some snapshots I took while we waited for our turn. For reference, we were the fifth in line and we were out of there after almost an hour!

I cut Elliot's hair this morning, and I think I'm going to outsource the job from now on.

First I combed it out so it looked horrible to insure that I would actually cut it.

"Lady, how am I going to show my face at Story Time when you did this to the back of my head?" Poor boy, it looks worse in person.

An Enthusiastic Homecoming

I received a warm welcome from Willie and Bianca upon our return from Atlanta. You know who didn't seem to care that we were back?

MY CHILDREN.

Mike and I went on vacation and gave the babies a week at camp. Camp = Auntie Debbie's house. Debbie sent me lots of pictures of the boys having a great time playing at the park, feeding each other and eating popsicles. I thought it would kill me to be away from them for five nights (as I hadn't ever been separated from them for more than a handful of hours), but we all did great. Debbie claims to have photos of their adventure, but I think she's going to hoard them all. So instead here are a handful of Georgia pictures.

My dinner in Savannah. Savannah is a 4 hour drive from Atlanta, where we landed. We hopped right into the rental car and started driving. It took forever to get to the coast, and the whole way we were regretting the choice. Until we (er, I) found out that we can drink beer on the streets. Mike was mortified that I took a photo of my meal, but it was so awesome looking, and even better tasting. Those are baby back ribs, sweet potato fries and gouda scalloped potatoes. I set the gouda potatoes aside because they weren't spectacular and I had other items to deal with. Did I mention that we were watching the OSU/USC game at the same time? A FANTASTIC night!

Houses in Savannah. The greenish one was listed for $3 million a few years ago, but we could probably afford a garage that's still in the historic district.

A sign by this bridge says "HILTON HEAD". I suggested we drive there so we can claim to be all upper class, but all the resorts are private and we didn't get to see the ocean. Lame-o. We did drive up to Atlanta on the "Doc Hollywood" route; two lane state highways that wound through tiny towns.

Mike and I like to eat at regional chains when we travel. We finally made it to a Waffle House, thank goodness! They are all over freeway exits and we choose a great one; the head waitress hollered a bit while we were there and bossed everyone around. I wouldn't want to fill the shakers wrong if I worked there! I had my second Waffle House meal all planned out, but we didn't get back to one. I would have taken a picture, but as I reached into my purse for something (not the camera) Mike insisted that I behave. We were at the bar at nine at night; we stood out enough without me flashing around.

These last few pictures are of Stone Mountain, outside of Atlanta. That's a fancy carving of the heroes of the War of Northern Aggression.

We've had a nice weekend. Mike and I tore up the basement bathroom and he installed tile (so far so good!). It's the first time he's used a tile saw and it went pretty well.

The babies and I hung out with Auntie Ada (wedding photos on their way) and then walked to the park with papa before bed. Today we walked to the coffee shop with Jake and Cody and their mama and dad. It was such a beautiful morning and we joked about how we were the perfect Portland picture after a police office pulled up next to us and waved. I said that all I needed was a lesbian partner by my side!

After Mike finished laying all the tile we went to the park again. It would be so easy to get used to this lovely weather and the family outings in the park.

I've been looking for a Teva-like shoe all summer, and when I finally found some actual Tevas at the Rack a few weeks ago I purchased them. Purple wouldn't have been my first choice, but beggars...

I am so in love with the bike trailer; it's so sad that they babies hate it. It's a combination of the helmets and the not-so-comfortable straps. I found that bribing them with frozen mango keeps them happy. We're going to the library in the morning; wish us luck!

Fast Food Nation, Part 1

On Monday we drove from the Inland Empire (The Furnace Of California) to Santa Monica. It was quite a bit cooler on the coast.

We had a good time walking around town, but couldn't find the right place to eat lunch. Both Henry and Elliot began to rebel while we were on the pier, where our food options were limited to carnival fare and Bubba Gumps Shrimp House. I'm not sure who actually eats at Bubba Gumps, but we've run into number of them lately. Blech.

So the babies shared a $4 hot dog.

I'm pretty sure it was organic.

At Mike's sister's house in California the boys had their first swim in a pool!

I slathered them up with sunblock and covered their little bodies into swim clothes.

Poor babies were probably burning up before getting into the pool; each day the temperatures were well over 100. Here are some photos of the good life.

Elliot's First Steps!!

When Henry and Elliot were tiny babies Elliot worked so hard to roll from back to front. They had both gone from tummy to back and were pretty reliable. For weeks Elliot arched his back and was able to get to his side. Everywhere we went I talked about how much Elliot wanted to move.

One really crummy night I was up and down; feeding the babies and trying to get them to sleep. About five am (I don't think the three of us had any real sleep) I was sitting in the glider between the cribs feeding Elliot. I heard scratching noises from Henry's crib; it sounded like a rat pawing at the sheet. When I used the night light and peered into the crib I could see Henry on his stomach! I started to laugh, turned on the light and decided that would be the perfect way to start the new day. But poor Elliot, he got robbed. All that effort only to be upstaged.

The tables turned around that time. Henry went from being extremely fussy to fairly flexible and mobile. Elliot had been a happy baby but around 5 months he began teething and nothing would make him happy. Henry started crawling at five and a half months; Elliot wanted to crawl but just couldn't get going. It's been hard to not compare them. Actually, I am constantly comparing the boys but am trying to not worry when one meets a milestone before the other.

Now at ten months both boys are fantastic! Elliot claps; Henry does not. Henry had begun to wave a bit; Elliot's more consistent. I'll look over and Henry will have a book open and will be looking at the pages, which delights me. The other day when I was feeling worried that Elliot rarely sits still he opened a book and played with it like Henry.

So these firsts steps are just the beginning. Henry's going to walk when crawling doesn't get him around fast enough. Elliot's going to eat when he wants to eat. It's hard to me to respect that they know what they need, but I'm getting there.

So, yay for baby Elliot! I'm so happy for these first little steps!

One Baby, Two Rice Paddles

Elliot is pretty aggressive. If another kid has a toy, he just grabs what he wants and tugs until it's his. Henry's a little more patient; sometimes he'll wait until Elliot's looking away and then pull the toy to him. This morning, though, Henry just reached over and took a ball out of Elliot's hand. Elliot just sat there. Maybe sharing comes in all forms?

Lead By Example

Mike went to the dentist last week and came home with a new toothbrush. We gave it to the babies because we're supposed to be brushing their teeth every night. Here's a video of me showing Henry how to take care of your gums.

While we were brushing I noticed that he has two more top teeth and two coming through on the bottom as well! That puts Henry in the lead with 8 teeth and very little fussing. Elliot's trying to catch up and is working on three of his top teeth, with minimal fussing. Good work, babies!

Tulip Garden

A few weekends ago we went to the Wooden Shoe Tulip Festival in Woodburn. Now, Woodburn is about 45 minutes away without traffic, and of course it takes a lot longer whenever something is happening in the area. We blew past all the cars stopped on the freeway trying to get off, hoping to bypass everyone by taking the next exit. Of course, the next exit wasn't for another 10 miles...so we probably ended up in the same position in the line of cars creeping down a two lane road waiting to park. I'm guessing that it took almost two hours from front door to parking spot.

Henry started to scream about 1.5 hours into the journey so after realizing that he could not be consoled without food I climbed into the back seat and wedged myself in between the carseats. A few notes: 1) We were pretty much stopped at this point; 2) I didn't take Henry out; and 3) we were in Mike's Shelby (the smallest car ever). That was almost as comical as watching the people in the car behind us make out.

So we finally make it, walk through the parking lot and see...a field of tulips. I've only been to Amsterdam, but I'm pretty sure in Holland the tulip gardens go on as far as the eye can see. Not so in our little state. We were a bit underwhelmed by the whole thing. Luckily the pictures turned out well!
